As of the 19th China has a new ruler: a man named Hu Jintao, a grey bureaucrat from the interior of China, has become Chinese Communist Party chief, President, and Commander-in-Chief of the Chinese armed forces. This is the first peaceful transition of power in Communist China, and I think it fair to say that we can now speak of the Party as having established itself as an aristocracy.

I am struck by how little there is about Mr. Hu in English-language sources. The Central Committee of the CCP has 158 members; it is unlikely that such a large organization can keep secrets effectively. Truth of the matter is, I think, the non-Chinese world is not paying attention.

In tastier Chinese News, the New York Times has an article on the history and state of Chinese restaurants in the USA. Subscription required—get it while it's hot.
